What goes into building a brick garden wall, from footing to cap?
Brick wall installation in Oceanside means building a brick garden wall on a brick or concrete footing set into undisturbed ground below the frost line, so the wall doesn't settle, then topping it with a cap that keeps rain off the faces. Before any of that, you choose a wall style and a brick, and sometimes stone work goes in alongside it.
Most people call me with a backyard plan, and plenty already have a bid they can't make sense of. The price moves with how long and tall the wall is, the style you pick, the brick and how much footing the ground needs, and the schedule turns mostly on whether the city wants a permit before we dig. My written estimate spells out what we'll do and why, so you know what you're paying for before you decide.
How do you know it's time for a new brick wall?
Old wall leaning or split
A wall that leans or has a crack running through it usually sits on a footing that moved, and patching the face won't stop that. The longer it leans, the more likely it drops brick, so if a brick repair won't hold, rebuilding on a proper footing is the honest fix.
Fence posts rotting again
If you're swapping out boards or posts every few seasons, the wood is losing to sun and damp, and every round costs you again. A brick wall on a sound footing asks a lot less of you once it's up.
Yard open to the street
Kids, dogs or a patio that faces the sidewalk can make a wall worth having. Nothing gets worse while you wait, so plan it when it suits you and your budget.
Often paired with a new brick wall
Stone masonry
Mixing materials looks good on gate posts and wall ends, and building the stone with the brick lets one crew line up heights and joints.
Brick pointing
Mortar wears faster than brick, so after years of sun and rain the joints on any wall eventually need raking out and refilling to stay sound.
How we build your brick wall
I start by helping you choose the wall style and the brick, because those two choices set the look, the price and how well the wall handles weather. Then our masons dig and set the footing, lay the brick, and finish the top with a cap that sticks out past both faces with a drip, a groove underneath that makes water fall off, so rain drops clear instead of running down the brick and the wall stays cleaner and drier. We clean up the site before we call it done.
Some yards want more than brick. If you'd like stone piers, a stone base or a matching planter, our stone masonry work fits right alongside the new wall. Years down the road, when the joints start to wear, brick pointing puts fresh mortar back in before water finds its way inside.
Pier and panel wall
Thin brick panels run between brick piers that brace them at intervals, so it uses less brick and it's relatively easy to build, which keeps the cost down. It also adapts easily when the ground changes level, so it suits yards that slope along the wall line.
Solid brick wall
Two layers of brick laid together make a heavier wall that looks finished from both sides. It suits a straight run on level ground where you want a full, solid look, and it takes more brick to build.
Low garden or planter wall
A short wall around a bed or along a patio edge gives you a clean border and a spot to sit. It's the simplest build of the three, and the cap matters just as much on a short wall as a tall one.

Call (760) 385-7783Why Oceanside homeowners call us to build brick walls
I write your estimate myself
I come out to look at your yard and write the estimate myself, and I explain the style, the brick and the cap until it makes sense to you. I'd rather tell you a job can wait than sell you one you don't need.
Building in Oceanside since 2021
I learned this trade in the field beside experienced masons and started this business in Oceanside in 2021. We work across many cities in San Diego and Orange counties, and if yours isn't on our list, call and ask.
Licensed and insured for wall work
We're licensed and insured. That matters on a job with an open trench and pallets of brick sitting in your yard.
Masons checked as they build
Our masons lay the brick and I check their work as it goes, because a footing or a cap is far easier to fix before the next layer goes on. It's how we stand behind our promise of satisfaction guaranteed on every job.
The footing and the cap decide how long a brick wall looks good, so ask me about both. Send us your project and I'll come take a look.
What happens after you call about a brick wall in Oceanside?
Call or send us photos
Call (760) 385-7783 or send photos of the spot through the form, and we'll get back to you to set up a visit. Pictures that show how the ground runs help me come prepared.
Walk the yard together
I come out, look at where the wall will go with you and explain what I see. Then I send a written estimate with the scope, what we'll do and why, so you can compare it line by line with any other bid.
Permit first, then the build
Once you say go, we take care of any city permit the job needs and meet the inspector on site. Then our masons dig the footing, lay the brick and set the cap.
Walk the finished wall
When the crew's done, I walk the finished wall with you. I'll show you what to keep an eye on over the years so you can look after it yourself.
Common questions
How much does a brick wall cost in the San Diego area?
Brick and masonry work in the San Diego area usually costs about $11 to $33 per square foot, and that's the going rate around here, not a quote from us. A taller wall, a solid build or a deeper footing usually pushes you toward the top of that range, while a pier and panel wall uses less brick. Your written estimate gives you your own number.
Does a brick wall in Oceanside need a permit?
It may, because Oceanside requires a permit to build any structure, and its list of exempt work names fences no taller than 6 feet, not brick walls. That list also exempts retaining walls up to 4 feet, measured from the bottom of the footing to the top of the wall, unless they carry a load above them or hold back certain liquids. Building Division staff won't give a verbal OK on exemptions, so ask the Oceanside Building Division for a ruling on your wall, and if you're not sure, we'll look into it with you before anything starts.
Do I need a licensed contractor to build a brick wall in California?
For almost any brick wall, yes, because California only allows unlicensed work on jobs up to $1,000 that need no permit, done by someone who employs no one. Masonry has its own license classification with the state licensing board, so look up whoever you're thinking of hiring before you sign.
How do I know if used brick is good enough for a garden wall?
Used brick only belongs in a garden wall if it meets the SW grade, the rating for brick that stands up to severe weather, and most used brick doesn't. If you love the reclaimed look, ask for salvaged brick that's graded SW or pick a new brick with that grade, which is how I steer people.
How much maintenance does a brick wall need?
Very little, as long as it's well designed and well built. The cap along the top and any sealant joints, the flexible seams that let the wall move, may need a look and a repair now and then, so plan on an occasional check of the top and the joints rather than steady upkeep.
What causes white powder on a new brick wall?
Usually it's new building bloom, a white haze that shows up shortly after a wall is built as it dries out. If it keeps coming back after that, water is probably getting into the wall and staying there, so the fix is finding where it gets in, and the top of the wall is where I'd look first.
Tell us about the brick wall you want
Call (760) 385-7783 or use the form with the wall's rough length, height, spot on your lot and whether it holds back soil, since a wall that holds soil is treated differently on the city's permit list.
