Do your brick joints need tuckpointing, and how much of the wall?
Tuckpointing, which masons more accurately call repointing or just pointing, means raking the worn mortar out of the joints in a brick wall and packing in new mortar so the joints are tight again. In Oceanside it often comes with swapping out a few cracked or loose bricks at the same time.
Most people call me because mortar is falling out of a garden wall or the side of the house, or because they already have a bid to redo the whole wall and can't tell if it's needed. The price mostly follows how many joints are actually bad, how high the wall goes and how easy it is to reach, and the schedule turns on that same size plus whether the city needs a permit for your job, which we'll check with you before anything starts.
How can you tell your mortar joints are wearing out?
Mortar sunk behind the brick
Look along a wall in low sun and you'll see joints that sit back from the brick face instead of flush with it. That usually means rain and time have worn the mortar away, and the longer it goes, the deeper the crew has to rake to reach solid mortar.
Mortar that crumbles to sand
Drag a key along a joint, and if it comes out as loose sand, the mortar has lost its strength. Joints like that let water work in behind the face of the wall, so it's worth a look before the bricks around them start to loosen.
Hairline cracks or open gaps
Thin cracks, little holes or a crack that runs through the mortar and into the brick itself all mean the joint isn't sealing anymore. A crack through the brick usually needs more than mortar, so I'll want to see it before anyone quotes just repointing.
Walls that face the sea air
Masonry research names sea spray as one way salt gets into brick and mortar, where it dissolves in moisture and then crystallizes inside the pores. That's general research, not a finding about your house, but it's a good reason to look closely at walls near the water.
Work that often comes with repointing
Brick repair
If some bricks are cracked, loose or flaking on the face, replacing them before the new mortar goes in gives you a wall that's solid all the way across.
Driveway pavers
If the brick on your house looks sharp again but the cracked concrete out front doesn't, pavers can carry that masonry look from the wall to the street.
How we do tuckpointing on your wall
I start by walking the wall with you and marking the joints that are actually failing, because good original mortar is worth keeping and you should see what you're paying for. Our masons rake the old mortar out of those joints until they reach sound material, wearing glasses and respirators since the work throws off a lot of dust, then pack in the new mortar, shape each joint to match the ones around it and brush the wall clean.
Repointing often turns up a few bricks that are cracked or loose, and we replace those with brick repair before the new mortar goes in. If you're freshening up the front of the house, our crew also lays driveway pavers, so the drive up to your door can match the wall.
Spot repointing
This suits a mostly sound wall with scattered bad joints, like a few near a downspout or along the top course. Hand tools such as a hammer and chisel suit small areas like this, and the rest of the wall stays as it is.
Repointing a full wall section
This suits a wall where most joints in an area have worn back or crumbled, so patching here and there would leave it uneven. Power grinders work faster on large areas but can damage the brick around the joint, which is a trade-off worth asking any mason about.
Repointing with brick replacement
This suits a wall where cracks run through the brick as well as the mortar. We swap the damaged bricks first and then point the joints around them, so the old and new work tie together.

The owner comes out himself
I come out to look at the wall and write the estimate, and our masons do the work while I check it as it goes. You deal with the person who explained the job from the first visit to the final walk.
In masonry business since 2021
I started on the sales side writing up jobs I didn't fully understand, so I moved into the field and learned the trade beside experienced masons. That's why I explain a bid line by line, and why I'll tell you when a wall can wait.
Licensed and insured in California
We're licensed and insured. California's licensing board counts brick, block and stone work as masonry contracting, so ask anyone who bids your wall whether they're licensed for it.
We handle the city permit
The city says most construction work in Oceanside needs a building permit, so if your job does, we take care of the application and meet the inspector on site. If it's unclear, we look into it with you before any mortar comes out.
Satisfaction guaranteed on every job. Contact us and I'll come take a look at your joints.
What happens after you call about tuckpointing in Oceanside?
Call or send us photos
Call (760) 385-7783 or send a few photos of the joints, and we'll set up a time to come out. We're based in Oceanside and work across many cities in San Diego and Orange counties, so if yours isn't on our list, just ask.
I look at the wall with you
I explain what I see and mark the failing joints with you, so you know which ones are bad and which can stay. You get the scope in writing, with what we'll do and why, so the price lines up with work you've seen.
Permit, then the crew works
Once you say go, we take care of any permit the job needs and our masons get started. I check the joints as they go, not just at the end.
Walk the finished wall together
When the joints are done and the wall is cleaned up, I walk it with you. Run your hand along the new joints and ask about anything you want explained.
Common questions
How do I know if my brick mortar needs repointing?
Masonry guidance says it's time when the mortar has worn back more than ¼ inch from the brick face, crumbles, shows hairline cracks or holes, or cracks along with the brick. You can check that yourself with a ruler and a key on a few joints. If your wall passes, it can probably wait, and I'll tell you so.
Does the whole wall need new mortar, or just the bad joints?
Usually just the bad joints. Only the joints that have failed need repair, and original mortar in good condition is better left in place than replaced. That's why I mark the joints with you, and why a bid to redo every joint on a mostly sound wall is worth questioning.
How much does tuckpointing cost in Oceanside?
Your cost comes down mostly to how many joints need work, because repointing is very labor-intensive and every joint gets raked out and refilled one at a time. A handful of bad joints on a low garden wall is a small job, while a tall wall with most joints gone takes far more labor and often scaffolding. Your written estimate shows which joints we'll do, so you can see where the money goes.
How long does new mortar last after tuckpointing?
Mortar lasts roughly 25 to 50 years, while brick lasts about 100 years or more. So on a brick house, plan on the joints needing repointing at some point during the life of the brick. It's a normal part of owning a brick wall, the way a roof needs redoing while the house stands.
What is the best way to pick mortar for repointing old brick?
Pick a mortar that's weaker than your brick, because mortar stronger than the brick can make the brick faces break off, which masons call spalling. Ask every bidder how their mortar compares in strength with your brick, and expect a plain answer. I'll walk you through that for your own wall at the estimate.
Who can get a building permit for masonry work in Oceanside?
Oceanside issues building permits only to California licensed contractors of the right classification, or to owner-builders. To act as owner-builder on a home, you need to have owned it for the last 12 months. The city's building permits page lists work that's exempt and how to request an exemption, and if your job needs a permit, we handle it.
